Community Description:A community dedicated to "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within"

GAIA THEORY
Welcome to [community profile] ffspiritswithin (or DREAM WITHIN/SPIRITS WITHIN), the belated livejournal community dedicated to the ground breaking 2001 computer animated film, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, written and directed by Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi.

Preface:
I've been a fan of the Final Fantasy series for roughly ten years and the one thing I have to thank for that is The Spirits Within and Final Fantasy X. Without either the film or that particular game, I believe I never would've taken a second glance at the FF series as a whole at all. Nothing is without its flaws (whatever the medium), but regardless of the fact that TSW lacks what is generally accepted as a Final Fantasy game/movie (meterosexual males, RPG elements, pretty girls in prayer position(s), [annoying] kids, spells and summons, over exaggerated weapons, wild costumes and an ever changing cast of meddling kids. I'm being facetious if you can't tell), this film was never given a proper chance by either the general movie audience or the Final Fantasy gamers alike (but then one doesn't expect much from a fandom who was probably wishing for a Final Fantasy VII movie, which was later given to them in 2005 and to no great affect outside of nauseous amounts of fanserivce and over the top action sequences, which were entertaining).

If anything, The Spirits Within is a extreme example of what "Final Fantasy" is: an ever-changing storyline, with new characters and somewhat new ideas put into radically different scenarios or situations. The only thing it lacks is the ability to control the characters actions and every aforementioned detail above. The film itself lifts from various elements of the earlier Final Fantasy games (one through five or four and seven), but since most fans exposure at that point was only Final Fantasy VII, VIII and IX, TSW's aesthetic was too different from what the gamers/fandom expected (and what many stated was a "Starship Trooper" clone back in the day). The movie only ever found a few supporters among the gaming community --- the ones who were able look past its differences and accept it as just another world in an ever-growing universe, as opposed to those who exhibit "necrophiliac loyalty" to the series' tried and true formula. Hironobu Sakaguchi, whatever his reasonings, took a chance on doing something different from the FF-norm and for all intents and purposes, I think he managed to succeed in creating another interesting reality that never lost the spirit or theme of what most Final Fantasy games are about. [Buster] Swords and spiky hair do not a Final Fantasy Make. Besides, without it, the world would've never had [The] Final Flight of the Osiris (2003) or Advent Children (2005).
BARRIER CITY
Storyline:
The year is 2065 and Earth is under siege.
A meteor has crashed onto the planet, unleashing millions of alien creatures which roam the Earth. Decimating field and city alike, these predators are threatening to extinguish all life on the planet. The survivors of the initial onslaught have retreated to barrier cities built to protect the inhabitants of Earth from the marauding invaders. But the few cities around the globe are in decline and time is running out.

Yet, the sprit of humankind is resilient and embodied in the brilliant and beautiful Dr. Aki Ross. Determined and capable, Aki strives as EarthÅfs last hope against extinction. With the guidance of her scientific mentor, Dr. Sid, and the aid of the Deep Eyes military squadron led by the courageous Captain Gray Edwards, Aki races to save both the Earth and herself. Terminally infected by an alien, Aki holds the key to discovering the secret to defeating the alien predators.

But her quest is jeopardized by the militant opposition of General Hein, who plots to unleash a massive space cannon that will annihilate the aliens and possibly the Earth. As the clock ticks down, Aki searches within her dreams to find an answer to the alien mystery, while scouring the Earth to collect the eight spirit waves she believes will save the planet. Fighting both the enemy within and the scheming General Hein, who would destroy the Earth in order to save it, Aki valiantly pursues her Final Fantasy.

Come July 2nd and 11th, 2011, The Spirits Within will celebrate its Tenth Anniversary since its release in 2001, so those of you who are fans of this movie (hardcore or casual) please feel free to join and contribute whatever material you wish to share here at the community.

General Information:
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
is the first Final Fantasy film and the first attempt to make a photorealistic rendered 3D feature film. Released on July 11, 2001 by Columbia Pictures, it used a budget of $137 million dollars, but only managed to gain $85 million dollars worldwide. Considered a "box office bomb", this delayed the merger between Square Co., Ltd. and Enix. Despite this, the film had received nominations for five different awards and the main character herself received considerable media coverage in the debuting year.
